The Dimers and the Greens – a picnic at Norseman

17/10/2018 By Moya Sharp 7 Comments

I was recently sent this wonderful photograph from OFH reader Peter Green, it is from his family album.

William Henry and Clara Elizabeth Green returning from a picnic with the Dimer Family at Norseman. C 1911

William Henry and Clara Elizabeth Green are in the front sulky.  The child on Clara’s knee is Arnold Joseph Green born at Burbank’s in 1910, he has been identified by Uncle Arnold’s son.

The story goes that Grandfather Green was mates with Hienriech Dimer from Nananbinia station, and on their visits to Norseman from the station they used to let their camels or horses out in William Henry’s paddock, that was on the south side of Norseman.

This photo was taken returning from a picnic near Norseman.  The Dimer family are on the four-wheel buggy being pulled by 2 camels.

William Henry bought a horse from Mr Dimer, he named it Bella after Balladonia, Nanabinia station is south of Balladonia, the horse served them well, but died on the railway crossing just past the Lake View mine on its way out to Golden Ridge. I am not sure if that is Bella in the photo.

Interestingly in Karl Dimers book, ‘Elsewhere Fine’, he mentions on returning home from school he was met at the Kalgoorlie railway station by Peter Crudace. Peter  was my grandmother’s brother, so there must have been a good family connection. Peter Crudace had a shop on the corner of Collins and Keenan street Kalgoorlie,he was also heavily involved in mining and prospecting in the area,he married Eva Wearmouth whose father was the Manager of the Burbank’s mine.

Great history continues Moya. I have contact with the Dimer Family and knew Karl when I was a boy in the shearing teams of the Goldfields and then later throughout my life. A great gentleman and had a beautiful Family. His book is a great read for historical buffs like me. The name ‘Wearmouth’ rings a bell as I feel I recall a store in Kalg run by this Family? Keep the stories coming.
