East Murchison News 28 February 1908, page 3 – MINING FATALITY.

One of those sad events, attended by fatal results, which unfortunately are becoming too frequent of late in mining, occurred at the Bellevue. Mine, Mount Sir. Samuel, on Friday 21st February, to a man named Frederick Reid, an old servant and a respectable citizen. Reid was well known in the district having lived in Mount Sir Samuel for the past nine years, seven of which he had spent in the employ of the company. On the day referred to Reid was engaged in attending to the machinery when by some means he was caught in the belting and sustained such injuries as resulted in his death.

As soon as the accident occurred Dr. Triado was summoned from Lawlers, and Reid conveyed to his home at 10 pm, where everything was done for the sufferer that medical skill could devise. His injuries were found to be of a very serious nature, for, besides the base of the skull being fractured, the collar bone was broken, and the deceased was much braised and otherwise injured. On Saturday morning Dr Triado ordered Reid’s removal to the Lawlers hospital, at which place the sufferer could be more skilfully treated. In the long journey down the greatest care was exercised in order that the condition of the sufferer should not be. interfered with.

On arrival at the Hospital Reid was at once attended to by the staff who did all that lay in their power for the man. On Monday by nightfall the end arrived and Reid passed away without having regained consciousness. The deceased was 39 years of age and a native of Walhalla. Victoria. He leaves a wife and two sons aged 15 and 17 years respectively. Mr Barnes J.P., on being apprised of the death considered an inquest unnecessary, and Dr. Triado having given a medical certificate as to the cause of death the remains were interred on Wednesday, a large number of people joined the funeral cortege.
