Menzies Update –

I mentioned a while back that I was starting an upgrade on the Outback Family History website page by page. The first town I started on was Menzies (for no particular reason). Now after much longer than I thought it would take, it is complete. Well as complete as any history page can ever be. As always, it will remain open for any corrections – additions or omissions.

The page is divide up into several sections as follows with an example of each section:-

MENZIES BUSINESSES:-

Mr Fred Dawson:- This is a prosperous business in the wholesale fruit, vegetables and general produce is carried on by Mr F W Dawson who commands a large proportion of ‘out-back’ trade. He sends farm and dairy produce to all northern centres and has a turnover of some 80 tons per month, the bulk of which goes to outlying districts. Mr Dawson started on a small scale but the volume of his business has continuously increased and he has twice found it necessary to move to larger premises until now where he occupies this commodious building here illustrated.

The Menzies Hotel, Menzies

The Menzies Hotel, Cnr of Brown and Shenton Sts Menzies Built 1902 (Now a cafe)
April 24 1901 – The Menzies Hotel is the pioneer hostelry of the town of Menzies. It is not a very pretentious looking structure but in the early days anyone who was anybody foregathered there and it was the centre of all the social life of the town. It was built by Mr H Gregory who now represents the electorate of North Coolgardie in the Wa Parliament. After he retired from the hotel Mr F Cornell became the landlord and he in turn gave place to Mr G H Jackson who now does a large proportion of the trade in the old house. Mr Jackson is a newcomer but his business abilities and genial disposition soon gained him hosts of friends. Visitors to the town should either stay at Jackoson’s or make a point of seeing him if the house is full and they are obliged to stay elsewhere. Fore rare and choice brands of good liquor jackson’s is the house.

MENZIES BOOKS:-

A Gold Seekers Odyssey  by L R Menzies – Leslie Menzies was one of the hopeful band of prospectors who arrived in Western Australia during the 1890s goldrush.  A successful miner in the USA & NZ his knowledge gave him an early advantage at Parkers Range & the Murchison. The Menzies mines were discovered by him in 1894.  In the ups & downs of mining Menzies found that down was almost out, Greener fields in Madagascar, Africa, Japan and later the Kimberley beckoned. He eventually retired to California where he wrote these reminiscences shortly before his death in 1939. Available from Hesperian Press:-

The next stage is to add short biographies to as many of the names of those buried in the Menzies Cemetery, my family included. If you have a short story of anyone buried there do let me know and I will add them in. Also, if there is something that you feel should be added to the page, I would like to hear from you.
