I have just completed my first batch of biographies on the people who are buried in the Leonora Cemetery. Every cemetery provides a social and family history snapshot of the town where its located. Accident and disease show no favorites. I hope that this small section of deaths will provide a good example to compare to other towns in the Goldfields. This first section starts in Jan 1902 and goes to early 1911 so just over 9yrs. I didn’t select this particular period to start on for any special reason, and there is still a very long way to go, not just for Leonora but for all the small towns.
One thing I have been able to do as I go is to extract the details of the mine accident deaths and those caused by ‘Miners Lung’ and to add their details to the Virtual Miners Memorial www.wavmm.com.
This first snapshot (more to come) is about the children. Im sure that you will all know that the child mortality rate in the early Goldfields days was very high, mainly due to lack of medical care both pre and post-birth for mothers and babies and the heat and lack of clean water. There are also childhood diseases such a whooping Cough, Diphtheria, Teething, and gastro conditions which took their toll.
This particular section looks at a total of 218 deaths, 79 of these are children under 5yrs and most are under 1yr. I am listing all of them here for the reason that it also shows the parents here in this time and place. Hopefully, they can then be found by any family who are searching. Incidentally, you will see there are four sets of twins, two of these sets of twins are to the same parents (Harvey). The mother of one of these sets of twins was also to die. (see HUNTER)

I’m interested in learning more about the Christmas and Harvey children as my grandfather, who immigrated from Limehouse, Middlesex to Leonora in 1908 could have been related. His mother was Emily Elizabeth nee Harvey b. 1827 Millwall, Middlesex and she immigrated to Collie in 1909. Her mother was a Sarah Elizabeth nee Christmas b. 1834 Norfolk.

Moya, Why are there 4 children noted for Mary Hunter? She only had two, or so a newspaper report said:
“Mrs. Hunter was prematurely delivered of twins and both died.” If she had four and they all died no
wonder she passed away too!
