In 1900 the Newcastle morning Herald announced that Mr John Avery and his daughter Miss Emily Avery were leaving for the Westralian Goldfields. It appears that Adamstown was in a coal mining area which was going into a downturn. The newspaper blamed Western Australia for the decease in the population. John had been a widower for 14 years before coming to WA. He would sadly die only four years later.
