Grave of Frank and John McKERROW – photo Danelle Warnock

This is a grave in the Kalgoorlie cemetery of two brothers, Frank James McKERROW who was buried 15 Jul 1896 and James McKERROW who was buried 1 May 1931. This first photograph, taken 87 yrs ago, after the funeral of James McKerrow, and shows the chapel (now the office) in a different location to where it is today. You can also see the cemetery gates in the background. The present day photograph in interesting to compare it to the surrounding graves. The office now obscures the view of the gates. Apart from the missing tree, the area has not changed a great deal.

OBITUARY.

The remains of the late Mr. James McKerrow were interred  in the Presbyterian portion of the Kalgoorlie cemetery on Saturday, May 2. The long funeral cortege testified to the high esteem in which he was held by all sections of the community. Leaving his late residence, 10 President-street, Kalgoorlie. the funeral proceeded to St. Andrew’s where a short service was held by the Rev. A. E. Jones, who. spoke of the deceased gentleman as a member of his congregation and upright citizen.
The late Mr. McKerrow was  a member of a well-known family from Sale, Gippsland, Victoria. In the early nineties, in company with his  late brothers, Messrs. Frank and George McKerrow, he came to the Eastern Goldfields, and was then responsible for the building of the Grand Hotel in Kalgoorlie and other well-known goldfields buildings. During the early days, Mr.McKerrow’s ability as a pianist, was a source of great pleasure to the men of Hannans. After a few years on the fields, Mr.McKerrow returned to Victoria, coming back to Kalgoorlie again about twelve years ago. Prior to his death he was employed at the Lake View mine, where he was highly respected. His widow and two sons, Messrs. James McKerrow. of Narrogin, and Colin, mourn his loss. Over 150 letters. cards, and telegrams of sympathy have been received from relatives and friends.
