East Perth Cemetery – Coolgardie People

While staying with my daughter recently who lives in East Perth we had the occasion to visit the East Perth Cemetery on Cemetery Hill which I had always wanted to see but as it is only open on Sunday afternoon between 2-4 I have not had the chance to before.  This old cemetery which operated from 1829 up and was the principal burial ground for the Perth area to 1899 and it is widely acknowledged that there are over 10,000 burials within the grounds of the East Perth Cemetery. There were no burial registers kept by either the Church Wardens or the caretakers of the Cemeteries. This led to researchers having to spend many hours compiling various histories and datasets on the East Perth Cemetery. More on the cemetery can be found @ East Perth Cemetery

I noticed from reading the headstones that there were several graves of Coolgardie People so I photographed these. Not till returning home and searching the East Perth Cemetery web page I found other mentions of those either born in or were residents of Coolgardie and these I have listed below. A number, as to be expected, are infants but other adults include the infamous Father Long of the ‘Father Long Hoax’ at Kanowna.

  1. Good morning Moya,

Enjoyed (if that’s the right word) your page on East Perth Cemetery. As it so happens I’m giving a talk about it tomorrow night so have been busy doing some further research and photographing. If you’d like a copy just let me know. But, please, next time you are down this way, do let me know for I’d love to meet you – 9276 3683.
    Best wishes – Ted Doncaster.

Hello….thank you for putting your name forward online Moya.

I have been tracing the Von Zalinski family today and you have mentioned the little six month old baby that belongs to our family – thank you for giving Max’s life a special piece of your page.

Most of the von Zalinski’s went to New Zealand. There is a descendant living in Sydney whose name is also Max (son of Olga von Zalinski, who is the little sister of baby Max, i.e. baby Max’s nephew).

Does he have a headstone? If so, I would soooo much like a photograph.

    Warm regards
Sandra, a Kiwi living in Melbourne

    • Dear Sandra I am so glad to hear you have found this little one, he is indeed not forgotten. He doesn’t appear to have a headstone unfortunately which is not too uncommon for a child’s burial. What is odd though is that the register states that he was born in Coolgardie. I have all the birth certificates for this year for Coolgardie and there doesn’t appear to be a certificate for him. I also cant find his birth on the WA BDM’s. I can only think that for some reason he birth was not registered. I find that this doesnt often happen despite the early date. I feel that this is an error as I have checked the WA Post Office Directories and see his father is listed in East Coolgardie which is actually Kalgoorlie so I would say that little John Max was born in Kalgoorlie and not Coolgardie. Also I noted that he (the father) is listed as just Zalinski which I suppose happens a lot (:

Hi Sandra and Moya, I was just searching for records for Olga von Zglinicki who is the grandmother of my partner Andrew. Andrew’s dad is 81 years old and is the son of Olga. We were not aware of John Max Olga’s son.

Sandra, it would be great to talk to you about your connections to the family.
