Darlot Update – the cemetery

Following up from the recent post on Darlot I would like to now add the cemetery details which will be also on the Outback Family History page for Darlot:-

“The exodus out East has been attended by sad results to at least seven of the hardy pioneers. Among those who have fallen victim to the hardships of a prospector’s life at Lake Darlot are Robert Elver, who died on the 27th July—late of Queensland; Samuel Carson, aged 45 years, May 14th Charles Beatles, 29 years, June 4th; H. Williams, 31st May:, 25 years, May 20; James Hilder, 28 year’s, May 2nd, and one other whose grave- is nameless. The graves are located about a mile from the field, at Lake Darlot, on the right-haud side of the track. To the diggers credit be it said that the poor fellows were tenderly cared for during their last moments, and the graves have been neatly fenced. Handboards giving the foregoing particulars have been erected, and the cemetry, mournful as are its associations, reflects credit to the the humanity of the men forming that outpost of civilisation in the wild mulga wilderness. A sick fund has been established at Lake Darlot, and its finances are regulated by several members of the Progress Committee, who cheerfully devote their rare moments of leisure to the duties of their position.

  2. It’s to the credit of Forsyth Mining to have these miners re interred. I personally had never heard of Darlot and found the details and stories very interesting. Thank you.
