‘Died on Christmas Eve’  :    96yrs ago !!!

Beatrice HOWARTH was married to Alfred William ‘Fred’ HEMINGWAY in Coolgardie in 1920. Only three years later she was to die in Southern Cross on Christmas Eve, 24th December 1923. Her husband was acting Station Master at Southern Cross at the time. She was expecting her first baby.

The friends of Mr .F. W. Hemingway, acting-Stationmaster, Southern Cross, were shocked on Monday of last week over the sudden death of Mrs Hemingway. The lady attended the evening service on Sun day at the Methodist Church and sang in anthem “Peace, Perfect Peace.” Subsequently on returning home the lady found that she had exhausted her strength and on the advice of Dr Margaret Clark was admitted as a,maternity patient to the Southern Cross Hospital, where she rallied and was apparently on the road to recovery. A few hours later, however, she passed peacefully away’ Later in the day the body was conveyed by train to Kalgoorlie for the funeral from the home of her parents, Mr and Mr John Howarth, 219 Mac Donald Street. The interment took place on the afternoon of Christmas Day in the Methodist portion of the Kalgoorlie Cemetery. There was 8 large number of mourners at the grave side, including officers and members of the Masonic Lodge “Golden Thistle.” 840 S.C, and members of the W.A.. Railway Officers’ Association.

She was buried in the Kalgoorlie Cemetery in the Methodist section in this double grave where she remains alone.

Alfred William Hemingway was to re marry in Perth in 1927, to Cora YOUNG, he died in Perth in 1952 and is buried in Karrakatta Cemetery.
