28/03/2020 By Moya Sharp Leave a Comment

Anton MARINKOVIC  – buried  25th September 1909 aged 16 months in the Roman Catholic Section of the Kalgoorlie Cemetery, Grave No 3365.

The inscription says:

ANTON
The Beloved Son of
Anton and Mary Marinkovic
Died 23rd September 1909
Aged 16 months
Had he asked us well we know
We should cry ‘O spare this blow’
Yes with streaming tears should pray
Lord we love him, let him stay.

Anton Marinkovic who was Austrian, was employed as a trucker on the Great Boulder Mine. His wife ran a boarding house which catered for fellow countrymen. In 1915 he was accused of operating a sly grog shop but was acquitted when it was shown that the wine he bought was for the consumption of the boarders. When he appeared in court he had to have an interpreter. The defense said it was the Austrian custom that

they drank wine instead of tea.

Anton (Tony) and Mary (Marie) nee SERVENTI, lived in Hopkins Street Boulder. They had four other children. They were Lukra Lucija (Lucy) born Boulder 1903 and Katherina born Boulder 1904, Dominic born Boulder 1906, Angelina born Boulder 1910.

Sadly all of the fencing around the grave has gone but the headstone is intact although it has come away from the plinth and now lies flat in the ground.

The following wedding photograph is of Lucy Marinkovich who would have been the older sister of little Anton.
