Historic Photographs now Online – From the Kalgoorlie Miner Newspaper 20th Dec 2014

Five thousand images taken by Goldfields Photographers documenting everyday life in the region from 1890’s to 1920’s are now available on the Western Australian Museums Website.
Taken by John Joseph Dwyer and Thomas Faulkner MacKay, the collection documents everything from the development of the mining industry to landscapes and the personal lives of locals.

WA Museum Kalgoorlie-Boulder manager Zoe Scott said it was fascinating to see what life was like in the Goldfields through the lenses of Dwyer and MacKay. “I’m pleased that everyone now has access to some of the Dwyer MacKay collection and can see a period of our history told through pictures” she said.

The digitisation of the collection is the first phase of the WA Museum’s ongoing work to make its collections more accessible to the public. Other collections will be uploaded in the future.

To view the collection visit www.museum.wa.gov.au and click ‘collections’ and ‘online collections’.

Hello Moya, a great website. I was looking at the Historic Photos Online – great photos.
I am interested in John Boileau and his wife, Dorothy Jean (nee GAM) who married in 1913. He seems to have been a high profile person in the Kalgoorlie area. I have seen photos of John but I would love to know if there are any photos of John and his wife or even just his wife.
Dorothy is the sister of my great grandfather, Jacob, and she is quite a mystery.

    • Hi Helene Yes you are right John Boileau was indeed a well know person around town. He first started out in Coolgardie before moving to Kalgoorlie to open another chemist shop. One of his children died in Coolgardie. I will look to see if I have a photo of him and his wife together, cant recall one but you you never know. Do you need details about family or have you already done this research. I think that over the years you are the fourth person who has been researching this family (:

Hi Moya, Thanks for your response regarding John Boileau and his wife, Dorothy Jean (nee GAMM). It would be wonderful if you could find a photo of John & Dorothy or even just Dorothy as she is my family interest.
I knew that John had been married previously but didn’t know that one of his children died in Coolgardie. He and Dorothy had one son, Edward. After John’s death, Dorothy later married William Cole (I think it’s William but could be wrong there but know that it was Cole). They moved to Victoria where she died.
I wonder if the other people researching the family are more interested in the Boileau line or the Gam line. You could pass my name onto those people if possible.
I would love to know when she was first in the area. I have been told that she owned/ran a shop there but don’t know if it was Coolgardie or Kalgoorlie.
        Regards
        Helene
