Here are a couple of entries:-

MARSHALL STREET, Piccadilly:-

John Marshall was a member of the Kalgoorlie Municipal Council in 1901. He was born in Scotland in 1859 and came to WA in 1891 and to the Goldfields in 1893. In Coolgardie, he assisted in forming the first Progress Association of Coolgardie. In his young days, he trained as a journalist and contributed to worldwide magazines. He wrote a book about the early days on the Goldfields called ‘Battling for Gold’. John Marshall died in 1908.

GORDON STREET, Mullingar:-

General Charles Gordon, Governor General of the Sudan, 1877-1880. He was sent to Khartoum in February 1884. Khartoum was captured by Muhammed Ahmed in 1885, and General Gordon was put to death on January 27th 1885. Khartoum was recaptured on September 2nd 1898, and General Kitchener performed a funeral ceremony for General Gordon at the spot where he was slain 14 years earlier.

If you would like to obtain a copy of the book, it can be purchased from the Eastern Goldfields Historical Society.

Holroyd Way. Is it named for our Great Grand Father James Edward Holroyd the Method Priest who drove his camel dray to visit his parishioners in the gold fields. Called the “ Fighting Sky Pilot” because he’d challenge the miners to a fist fight and if he won , they had to attend a church service.

Hi Susan: The book ‘Street Names of Kalgoorlie Boulder’ which is referred to on the Councils web site:- https://www.ckb.wa.gov.au/CKB/media/Documents/Library%20and%20Heritage/Documents/Street-names-of-Kalgoorlie-Boulder-2016-V2.pdf

The book has the following:- HOLROYD WAY Fairways – Arthur J Holroyd, metallurgist with Messrs Tinley, Holroyd and Co. Assayers while assaying the rock from Block 45 (also known as Victory Mine) discovered the presence of gold in teluride and how to treat it. The discover was recognised officially in August 1897. You may be able to get this corrected if it is wrong.

    Good afternoon Moya
I am wondering if Evans street is named for AJ Evans, Boulder councillor, chemist and auctioneer (and my GG Grandfather). I would appreciate a lookup in What’s in a name? by E.A. Dawson
    many thanks
    Tania
