Ripping Yarns & Tragic Tales – 26th September 2021

I hope that you have had a good week and thank you to everyone who responded with your comments from last week. If I haven’t yet replied to you, I promise that I will do so. You will see this week we have another excerpt from Chris Clark’s research into the ‘Lasseters Lost Gold’ saga. His research has been meticulous and detailed. I do hope that many of you will wish to read his book.

The Truth about Lasseter – Why his elusive gold reef never existed.

Many of you will know that last year Outback Family History started a community group to help to preserve and restore the second Kanowna Cemetery which was in a very poor state. It took a while to get off the ground by getting permission to carry out work from the City of Kalgoorlie Boulder. The cemetery comes under the Kalgoorlie Boulder Council area but they are not financially responsible for it. The cemetery also is not on any current mining lease which was also a difficulty.

Just to keep you up to date – It has taken some time but thanks to the Eastern Goldfields Prison we have been able to renew and repair the fencing so that it is now all secure and vehicles and animals cannot gain access. The next step is to grade a bund wall to deflect a watercourse that is running directly through the cemetery and causing a great deal of subsidence and damage to graves. Just this week I was attending a meeting with the council with one of my other hats on ‘The Kalgoorlie Boulder Cemetery Board’ hat, and I was able to raise the question as I ‘just as I happened to be there’ of getting council assistance to access a grader/bobcat to do this next step. The acting CEO has indicated that the council will be able to help us out so I have lodged an application with them.

Just prior to this we had been in touch with Northern Star Resources who have kindly agreed to assist us with some material we can use for the new pathways in the cemetery which also form the denominational boundaries. So we will keep you in touch with progress in that regard.

Did You Know?? the following cemeteries come within the Kalgoorlie Boulder Shire Boundaries. The Kalgoorlie Boulder Cemetery Board is only responsible for the Kalgoorlie Cemetery and the current Boulder Cemetery. There are burials in all of these gazetted cemeteries which you can see by going on the Outback Family History website. Something I didn’t know till recently is that none of these cemeteries, apart from Boulder Pioneer Cemetery, has been officially closed.
