Ripping Yarns and Tragic Tales – 27th June 2021

Hello to all our readers

Hope you have had a good week and you are keeping warm (depending on where you are).

I recently had an email from someone who wanted to know all of the various sources for family and local history in the Kalgoorlie Boulder area, and also how each group/body was set up. I thought this may be interesting to others so here is the info I passed on.

NOTE: If you are part of any of these bodies or groups and I have the description wrong, do let me know.

The Museum of the Goldfields at the top end of Hannan Street is a ‘branch’ of the WA Museums of Western Australia. The Museums are state-funded and have a fully paid staff. They regularly have traveling displays and also offer children’s programs during school holidays. Daily tours are given and the staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. They also have the Eastern Goldfields Miners Memorial on the grounds. https://museum.wa.gov.au/museums/museum-of-the-goldfields

The Eastern Goldfields Historical Soc in Hamilton St, Boulder is an incorporated society. They are affiliated to, but not controlled by, the Royal WA Historical Soc in Perth. Items donated to them will stay in the Goldfields. They have their own building and receive funding from memberships, donations, and various grants.  It is run by a committee and volunteers.  https://kalgoorliehistory.org.au/

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s History and Heritage Unit is home to local history archives and houses a wide collection of council documents, historical books and videos, microfiche index of births, deaths, and marriages since 1841, microfiche Pioneers index, Legislative Assembly role since 1904 and various Goldfields’ Newspapers since 1895 on microfilm.  History and Heritage:

Goldfields War Museum:
Housing a vast collection of war memorabilia from citizens of the Goldfields, you can explore the personal stories of these brave servicemen and women. A visit to the Goldfields War Museum will be an enriching experience for anyone with an interest in Australia’s history and warfare. It is housed in the Boulder town hall building in Burt Street, Boulder War Museum

Kalgoorlie Boulder Visitors Centre Kalgoorlie Boulder Visitor Centre (KBVC) is the largest, fully accredited, not-for-profit Visitor Centre in the Goldfields. It is the hub and gateway for tourists and visitors to the greater outback region. It is to be found on the ground floor of the Kalgoorlie Town Hall.

The Hannans North Tourist Mine After the closure of the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame in 2011, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) committed to assisting the local community to develop the existing Hannans North Tourist Mine exhibits into a sustainable tourism attraction. The ongoing support of the local and regional community, together with that of visitors is vital to the success of this valuable asset and piece of Western Australian cultural heritage.  http://www.hannansnorth.com.au/

I do hope that you enjoy this week’s stories. I particularly enjoyed putting together the ‘Outback Mail Run’ story. I hope enjoy reading it as well.

So it’s goodbye from me, and I will see you next week.
