The above photograph may be the earliest image taken in the Kalgoorlie Cemetery. It is of the grave of Martin Howard, Kalgoorlie – Registration 503/1895, age 26yrs. Nothing remains today of this memorial. It’s not known if it was made of wood or stone. There appears to be no other graves in the background.

Martin Howard died on 9th February 1895. The headstone was erected by his brothers M.G. and P. Howard of the South Australian Railway. Martin Howard died in Hannan’s Hospital [ie Kalgoorlie] after 4 days of Typhoid Fever. RIP.

HOSPITAL PATIENTS – A letter was received from the Secretary of the I.O.U. (former name of the town of Bulong 34 km East of Kalgoorlie) Progress Committee asking that patient named Martin Howard be admitted to the hospital and asked what terms patients from the I.O.U. would be admitted in the future.

I have tried without success to find out some more about Martin but so far I can find nothing, even with the initials of his brothers. Can anyone add to his story?
