The Gold Seekers halted at Southern Cross, Western Australia in 1888 and from there the ‘break through’ into the desert was one of the hardest tasks in the history of Australian prospecting. The optimism and courage of the diggers are reflected in ‘Hurrah for Old Coolgardie’!
Hurrah! for old Coolgardie,
All true men brave and hardy;
Roll up your swags and come along,
With smiling faces and lively song:
Come, all men true and hardy,
Let’s start for old Coolgardie.
Ne’er heed the heat, ne’re heed the sand,
For are we not a jolly band?
Come, all men true and hardy,
Haste up for old Coolgardie.
See! There’s the place, I’ll shout my boys,
They’ve nuggets there to crown our joys;
Come, all me true and hardy,
For, there stands old Coolgardie.
