Hinde’s Cash Chemist – grave tales

I was recently sent this wonderful photograph of John Lord Hinde’s Chemist shop in Coolgardie by Nanette Danks who tells me:

My great-grandparents arrived in Coolgardie, I presume about 1894. The family legend is that Daisy Hinde (Alice Georgina, actually) was the eighth woman on the goldfields and Beryl was the only child for a while. All very hard to substantiate. Today I opened an old book, a French/English dictionary to be precise and it is inscribed Beryl Olga Hinde (my grandmother), Convent School, Woodward Street, Coolgardie. No date but Beryl was born in England in 1890 and the family moved to Kalgoorlie in 1900.

The Hinde family had a Chemist shop (Hessian), above, showing John Lord Hinde dispensing, which he did in the mid to late 1890’s. He was often in the news as offering to chair meetings or render a musical item and supporting Bulong.
