Elliott and Gaillard - Corner of Hannan and Porter sts

Elliott and Gaillard – Corner of Hannan and Porter sts, Kalgoorlie

I am sure that this building in our main street will look familiar to many of my readers. Today it is little changed and is on the corner of Hannan and Porter Streets in Kalgoorlie. Today it is known as ‘Monty’s Restaurant’ formerly Montgomery Bros Drapery and Merchandise.  However, in 1903 the business was as you see it in this photograph. The premises of Elliott and Gaillard Importers.  The photograph was taken in the Western Argus Newspaper on the 29th December 1903 and as you will see from the sign Mr Gaillard is retiring and they are having a ‘Gigantic Dissolution Sale’  Mr Elliott continued on with the business alone until bought out by the first of the Montgomery family to own this iconic Kalgoorlie building around 1908.

In the upper left of the pic of “Monty’s” can be seen the words “Great Western,” referring to the hotel of that name. This would seem to sort out the long-held belief that the original Great Western was across the road on the site of what later became the Tatts/Savoy hotel. The Great Western was later re-named the Crown hotel.
