CBC Basket Ball – sports stars

16/02/2019 By Moya Sharp 5 Comments

Christian Brothers College Kalgoorlie has a long sporting history. There following are some photographs from the basket ball teams:-

The missing name in the above photograph is Alan Cummings 1978-1979 Premier Winning Team.

The following verse was written by OFH reader, Tony Bozich:-

There’s the dream comes back
of family, friend or schoolfellow long departed,
from which one wakes gently
and ineffably sad hearted.
I dreamt Brother Doyle last night,
we were crossing paths some place,
going up to him I asked,
“Are you Brother Doyle?”
His face looked uncertain
as though thinking
“Why is he asking?”
and he didn’t seem to recognise me.
And I thought he looked so young!
“How old are you?” I said,
thinking “He taught me at school,
he must be older than I.”
Without waiting for an answer I said, “I’m 71.”
Then, he was carrying a plate of sandwiches,
approaching a table to sit down,
and looking over in my direction

 as though to say,
“Come and join me, we can talk over old times.”
At the same time in the dream
I seemed to be drifting away and toward an exit door,
and then the dream was over
in an aftermath of gently sad and tearful wakefulness.

Moya I was one or two years ahead of the boys in the 1957 – 1958 team and remember Brother Crough who was a great tennis player well. Thank you for the memories. Terry

Yes, Moya, Brother K S Crough I think in 1956 my last year at CBC initiated both the hockey and the basketball. Crough took over as principal from possibly the most remarkable christian brother to serve at CBC Kal, Brother Bernard Casimir Manion, who started and finished a comprehensive building programme at the school. Some of us still have reunions and he is still regarded with respect and reverence – a man of broad vision and outlook although not yet forty then, who possibly was regarded as a bit too liberal and was never again a principal.
Moya, I was wondering, is the Brown in the photo in fact Andy or Buster Brown and not his brother Jim?

Moya There were also other remarkable brothers: Bro (Baldy) Smith who was at CBC for may years, Bro Vin Andinach who was very learned and others. I started at CBC in 1950, went interstate, and returned for leaving in 1957. The best of times. Terry

Moya, I feel old Baldy was an efficient teacher in the 3R’s, but a bit too fond of using corporal punishment and too hard line in religion. Indeed, many of the teachings of the Catholic Church of those days are no longer taught, for instance mortal sin for missing mass on Sundays and holy days and hell. Brother Andinach also taught me, a lovely and compassionate man and conscientious teacher. But Manion was unforgettable.

Tony As I recall Tom Goode referred to Brother Manion as “Mother” Manion. Tom held him in very high regard.
