George Nethercott – Boer War Soldier

This is the photograph of George Hodgkins Nethercott, formerly acting Mayor of Kalgoorlie. He is believed to be the first Australian killed in the Boer War. Nethercott Street in Kalgoorlie is named after him:-  From ‘Whats in A Name, Street names of Kalgoorlie Boulder.’

George E Nethercott was elected to the Kalgoorlie Council when Syd Ward retired. He was acting Mayor in Wilson’s absence. He left Kalgoorlie in 1897 and when to Rhodesia where he was shot in  frontier fight in 1901. He was also president of the Racing Club in 1896.
