Alice Jane Farquhar – grave tales

On the 15th November 1900 Alice Jane FARQUHAR nee NICOL, aged 41yrs, was buried in the Anglican section of the Kalgoorlie Cemetery. After 120 years you will see that her memorial has stood the test of time.

Alice was the daughter of Alexander NICOL who was a shipowner and Lord Provost of Aberdeen and Jane nee CHALMERS and was from Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland, born on the 24 May 1858.

Alice was the wife of Captain Albert Farquhar and they married in Aberdeen in 1887..  Albert had only been in Kalgoorlie since Jun 1900 when he travelled from London to take up the post of assistant general manager and local secretary of the Lake View Consols and the Ivanhoe. In the same month he arrived the company started construction of a house for him on the Ivanhoe Lease.

Two weeks after Alice’s death he again sailed for London. He never returned to Australia and died in Kent England on the 10 Nov 1935 aged 71 yrs. The couple had two children, Lieutenant Alastair Charles Nicol Farquhar born 4 May 1888 in Iowa USA. Alastair was in the Royal Navy and lost his life in the service of his country in the English Channel on the 17th June 1916, aged 28. Also, Adelaine Mary FARQUHAR born 1890 in Scotland.
