A Hundred Quid in a Day !!!

18/04/2020 By Moya Sharp 3 Comments

Weekend News 26th Jul 1969.

In 1969 Frank Weight, aged 75yrs, was one of only three permanent residents of Kanowna. A town that once had 17 pubs. Frank stated he hadn’t been in Kanowna very long, only since the last war. Frank doesn’t have a car and if he can’t get a lift, he makes the 18 mile trip to Kalgoorlie on foot. As there are lots of cars on the road he is often offered a lift. His grocer in Kalgoorlie would then bring him home.

A typical old timer, he still believes there’s a bit of gold around. he has prospected on various fields around Australia, but his best strike was at Kanowna one day when he found

‘a hundred quid in a day’

The second resident lives about 500 yards away, his name is Tom Fitzpatrick. Tom has lived in Kanowna on and off for 35yrs. He passed through Kanowna in 1919 when as a soldier when he had just been demobbed. The third resident was Scottie Henderson, Kanowna’s last publican.

Frank ‘Francis Joseph WEIGHT was buried in the Kalgoorlie Cemetery on 7th Feb 1975 aged 81yrs.

Tom ‘Thomas Anthony’ FITZPATRICK was buried in the Kalgoorlie Cemetery on 28th Sep 1978 aged 88 yrs.

Hi Les the 1970’s is a bit to recent for my records. I would say that would have been his nick name.
