I recently received this wonderful photo from a fellow historian who lives in Wales, Alwyn Evans. He tells me:
In 1900 Wiluna was hit by massive floods after 28 inches of rain, and all work ceased for some time on the Gwalia Consols mine which George Hall and the Westralian Mines and Finance Agency were funding and which was managed by Alexander Wilson Castle.
As a result when the floods receded, the desert burst into bloom, and this photo ( incorrectly dated as 1899!) which I acquired from Denis Shaw, Castle’s grandson, shows Castle and his wife Deborah surrounded by a veritable sea of flowers. Even their dog (just below Castle and his horse)is almost swamped by the blossom. I just love the little dog!
