Coolgardie Miner 6 January 1909, page 2

A Series of Misfortunes — A sad fatality occurred at Mount Sir Samuel on Friday which resulted in the death of a young man named Reid. The deceased was engaged in doing repairs to a belt in the engine room at the Bellevue mine when he left carrying with him a hammer. He ascended to the roof and fell through a corroded sheet of iron. The driving wheel was in rapid motion at the time and Reid fell on to the flanges and was then thrown violently against the railing which guards the pit, and from this place he fell into the pit. He only lived about a quarter of an hour.

He was conveyed to his mother’s home, just as his father had been and it is singular to relate he met his fate within ‘ten feet’ of the place where his father, only ten months before sustained such injuries as resulted in his death. Mrs. Reid has surely had a large measure of trouble, Seven years ago her sister’s husband was shot as a result of a gun accident at Sir Samuel, and nine weeks ago Mrs. Read buried her father. She is now left with an only one son who is in delicate health.
