VICTORY FOR THE STRIKERS

Kalgoorlie Western Argus: 14 July 1903. – A correspondent, telegraphing under yesterday’s date from Mt. Morgans, states: A fierce and decisive battle has been fought in this town, the contest lasting exactly 48 hours. The miners, led by Captain Frampton, held a meeting on Friday night in the Main-street, when it was unanimously decided that the hotels should be boycotted until the price of colonial beer came down from 1s to 6d, and seeing that Burtville, a town over 40 miles away, rejoiced in this luxury, the resolution was a very fair one.

The men held to their guns from 9 o’clock on Friday until about the same time on Sunday. With, of course, the usual exception of a few weak minded individuals, whose entry into the various hotels was accompanied by severe hooting from the onlookers.

Procession during the Mt Morgan’s Beer Strike – Photo TROVE

Entertainments and speeches were the order of the day and night to keep the enthusiasm going, and on Sunday night, while a smoke social was being held in the A.W.A. Hall, a demonstration took place. This consisted of the appearance on the stage of the various hotel keepers. They all spoke, and from the tone of their remarks it was very evident that they were already very tired of the strike, especially as the last weekend was connected with a pay day on the Westralia Mt Morgans mine, and hardly a sovereign was divided amongst the six hotels. The battle was over, and the men had won the day. Beer and colonial wines will now be charged at the popular price of 6d per glass.

Excited tongues speak full of wrath
About the price of beer,
That penny makes it dear.
For good and full ten ounces
We’ll only pay a zac,
Why should we pay that extra brown?
Declare the darned stuff “black”.

Early days in Mt. Morgan District recalled by
‘One of the Pioneers’ John MILNE

I am one of the pioneers of your district and, after, an absence of 43 years, I would like to receive word of what is now being done in the Mt. Morgan district. I am only 75 and before I pass along, I intend to visit, in the near future, my old happy prospecting ground, but while I am writing I will tell you my early connections with W.A.

I swagged it from Southern Cross to Coolgardie in 1894, arriving there at the time of the Londonderry rush. I joined it, but the ground was pegged out for miles. It was only a surface show, but it was a beauty. A London company took it over and a large amount of samples were sent home to the ‘Old Country’. In due time they sent a cablegram to the manager:

“When does the first crushing take place?”

The reply was short and sharp and to the point: “When you send the money.” They afterwards called it the Londonderry. Hannan’s was next on the list. I went dry blowing on the Maritana Hill, now known as Kalgoorlie and I took up a lease near the Brownhill, not far from the Boulder which I later sold to some Londoners.

Kurnalpi and the Broad Arrow were the next rushes. Water was bad and scarce, so I made for the 90-mile where a storekeeper’s rush was on, but we got water at Bardoc, Next came Menzies and then on to Murrin Murrin. I went broke and went to work at the Malcolm Proprietary Mine, with Horton as manager and Joe Guest as shift boss. I was soon moving again, prospecting around Red Castle, but found no water nearer than Bummers Creek, 20 miles away.

On the Tramp – Photo TROVE

Then I joined a prospecting party going to Hawk’s Nest, but when we got to Mt. Margaret early in 1898, I joined with another prospector, going to Mt. Morgan. After we got a water supply and tucker at Allanson’s store, we started to follow a trail going out towards McKenzie Well in the flat country back of the Morgan Ridge. After some time, we struck rich floaters, so we cleared the scrub and pitched our tents, made a fire and soon had the billy boiling and a mulligan stew and flap jacks for supper. Then we fixed our ‘Queensland bunks’, two sacks stretched out, a pole on each side and forks top and bottom and we were all set. Yes, the local natives were soon around us, but they gave us no trouble as long as we gave them some tucker. They were the Pendinny Tribe and they knew me from Red Castle.

Allanson’s Store, Mt Morgans – Photo SLWA

After a couple of weeks chasing floaters we located two reefs running parallel, carrying good gold. We soon found one pinched out but the other about two feet wide had a hanging and footwall going down strong. We were about one mile from McKenzie’s trail and about three miles northwest of Morgan Ridge. We located another reef carrying gold on the west of our camp, so we pegged out two 24 acre leases and applied for them at the Warden’s Court at Laverton in the name ‘Milne and Holman’. I was known as Scotty. We called our claims

‘Pride of Mount Morgan’ and the ‘Bon Accord’.

That was a Scotch name meaning, of one mind. We sunk a shaft 60ft on the Pride and sent two crushing’s, 20 tons each, by camel team to the Australia United battery and we got a return of 2oz. to the ton and 25dwt in tailings.

About that time a five head stamp mill was erected at the bottom of the hill near Harrison’s and not far from Dempsey’s claim. We sent a crushing of about 15 tons and got about 2½oz. gold to the ton and were allowed ½oz for tailings. About that time a fault took place in our reef and dolomite took its place. That was a very valuable mineral out here during the war, but it sure was a pure loss to us. As we could not get rid of it, we sunk a shaft on our other lease where there was a large body of stone, about 5ft. wide in some places. After we got a sample assayed the best we could get was ½ oz. per ton, so at that time, it was too low a grade to pay. After doing some more development we had to give our leases to other prospectors with more money and better luck.

Burt Street, Mt Morgans – Photo SLWA

I went to work on the Morgan Mine. Stephenson was shift boss, and sometime later Piercy Morgan came along as manager and Joe Guest’s crowd took over the Phoenix and changed its name. In August 1898, the township of Mt Morgans was laid out. Jack Lennan had a hash shop near the post office, which was a large tent with a bush shed over it, and Harris, the constable, would put the drunks on a chain for a few days. Allinson built a store on the main street, and then Smith put up a big hotel on one corner and Clarke built on the other. Later Kealey came over from the Margaret and built another. Then there was Harris and his wife, who had a store, and lots more I forget. They also built a racetrack and a hospital. About that time the first council was elected, and Jack Smith was Mayor. I have a good memory.

John ‘Jack’ Smith, Mayor of My Morgans – Photo SLWA

About the second year of this century Alexander Forrest, a brother of John, was calling for help to go with him to South Africa. I joined the crowd and after that business was settled, I had a vacation in my native Scotland. After that, I came to God’s country, California, where I settled, and raised an American family, and years ago I struck it rich through the real estate route. I am now looking forward to my trip to the goldfields of good old W.A.

I have given you a few lines early history and someone may find time to send me a few lines. I forgot to mention, Joe Ball was the handyman around the Morgan. I hope the mine is still going strong.

Then by early 1905 Mary and the girls were back in Perth staying with her sister as Louis was no longer in the picture. Mary had taken Louis to court for maintenance for the two children with no success. Glenda has the missing persons report Mary filed in 1908, and there is no more info I can find on Louis after last being seen in Fremantle in 1907. There is no death certificate for him either and he was a bit of a wheeler-dealer so I fear he may have met an untimely demise as he was never heard from again.”

The four sons, John, Henry, William, and David were all born in Mt Plesant, Victoria. The sons of David Mickle and Mary Maria Margaret nee SHAW. David Mickle – Mt Morgans

The party whom I wish to bring under this particular heading at present is Mr. David Mickle, hairdresser and tobacconist. David struck, the township in the year of our Lord 1901, and started business in a very humble way in a small hessian humpy somewhere off Murrin street. A very remarkable event happened at Mt Morgans about this time, which David still relates with gathering tears in his optics, and that was the breaking and entering of his establishment by burglars, who took with them when they left the sum of £8 in notes, and the reason they didn’t take any more was that there wasn’t any more to take.
Providence must have looked down with an eye of pity on David because his career ever since has been like that of the Mercury, upward and onward. In short, David has prospered, and he is now the proud possessor of the largest hairdressing saloon (beautifully mirrored and pictured) on the northern fields. David presides over the football association and rules that body with a firm and gentle hand. He is also a great patron of outdoor games, and when he promises a medal or donation he is always as good as his word. In short, to see any sports meeting without its David would be as great an anomaly as to see Mayor Jack Smith walking about without his head. David never gives any imaginary presents, they are always real. Therefore when anyone feels time hanging heavily on his hands let him repair to David’s saloon, where a solo on the flute surely awaits him.

David Shaw Mickle married Jane Charlotte AVERY on the 12th of Jul 1899 in Leichhardt NSW. The couple would go on to have five children: Avery David Morgans born 1900 (7mths who died in 1901) – Agnes Dorothy Maud born 1902 – Olive Mary Catherine born 1904 – Aliza Elizabeth born 1906 and David Rupert James born 1908. All of the children were born in Mt Morgans. Sadly David was declared bankrupt in 1909 and he died on 30 Aug 1912 aged 51. He is buried with his son and first child, Avery, in the Mt Morgans Cemetery.

A player from our gallant crowd, lay dying in his tent.
His comrades standing by could see his life was nearly spent;
They listened with an anxious ear to hear what he might say,
They knew full well he could not live till dawned another day.

‘Oh! comrades’. said the dying man, one last wish I crave.
Just take me down to Mickle’s shop to get a decent shave;
In days gone by he cut my hair, made me look spruce and clean.
And many a time in Mickle’s shop some splendid work I’ve seen.

My father who died long ago, upon a foreign strand.
Had youth and beauty in his looks when shaved by Mickle’s hand;
And mother, dear (a friend she was, the kindest of mammas).
Would often say she loved the smell of Mickle’s best cigars.

She always gave me good advice, as only mothers can,
And told us when we learned to smoke that Mickle was the man
Who sold the best tobacco and who did a roaring trade.
And put the other shops, completely in the shade.

But, comrades, I must leave her now, and if her poor heart frets.
Tell her I smoked my farewell smoke in Mickle’s cigarettes.
She’ll know that I obeyed then, it will her fond heart cheer.
So give my love to Mickle boys, I cannot linger here.

“I’m dying, yes. I’m dying.” gasped the gallant player, when
He gently sighed and breathed his last amid the sorrowing men;
And when he reached the golden gates, no one told him to stop;
The angels knew the hero brought some weed from Mickle’s shop!

She’s a real heroine of the bush.

This history was researched to hopefully provide the provenance of a collection of jewelry, which was donated to a suburban historical society. I was Keeper of Records at the society and decided to undertake the task of research as the inscriptions on the jewelry were interesting.

Mount Morgans Government Hospital

A silver trinket box was inscribed “presented to Matron Hart by G Alford”, And a gold brooch was presented to “Nurse Hart from Dr and Mrs. Hart for her kindness”. A gold watch had been presented to “Matron Hart from the people of Morgans in 1916” or 1914. There was other jewelry, some of considerable value and certainly a ring with one large diamond. All this raised many questions. I searched for 18 months and this is what I discovered after working backwards from early information given by two responses from a “Can You help?” insert in the Western Australian newspaper.

Matron Emily Hart in Mt Lawley WA with her pet kangaroo.

Emily Murphy was one of eleven children and schooled at her hometown of Landsborough in Victoria. The next available record shows Emily undertaking nurse training at Warracknabeal, Victoria. This is a large town north west of Landsborough.

Emily had a married sister in Port Lincoln, South Australia and she spent 4-5 years nursing there until she married Henry Ramsay Hart in 1905. He was the son of a Doctor of Theology and his wife and they would have given the gold brooch to Emily.

This marriage only lasted for a very short time because Emily was in Morgans WA in1906. I was not able to find any records of her husband other than he was a hairdresser. Emily was listed as a widow but death records do not show anything for Henry. Considering the time she spent in the eastern goldfields and my having communicated with her family in Landsborough it is reasonable to suggest that she hid herself in Western Australia. There was virtually no contact with her siblings for many years and my research gave them the missing link to where she had been.

Emily was Matron of Morgans Hospital in 1906, and thought to be a single woman. It is recorded that she loved all animals and at Morgans Hospital her pets were a Bungara lizard and a large brindle dog. The medical journals of the day list the Morgans Hospital as one of approximately 14 in the state to receive a two hundred pound subsidy for the care of aboriginal people. Emily still remains on the electoral roll for Mt Margaret in 1928.

G Alford proved to be George Alford and he was secretary of the Morgans Hospital during this time and I have included his available information, as he is a significant person. George attended the committee meetings of the Laverton Roads Board as Morgans is in the district of Laverton.

This information was found in the WA State Records Library 1907 – 1913 Laverton Roads Board Health Committee Minutes original book (back cover damaged by termites).

In 1911 George made application to become a Roads Board Member and that was successful. In 1911 George was Union Secretary of the WGFM at the Mt Morgans Gold Mine. He gave evidence at the hearings for the development of the Statute book for Silicosis.

George was born in Ballaratt, Victoria 1870 and he and his wife Sarah lived with their 4 children at Lot 333 Kings St, Morgans. George died in 1918 of tuberculosis at the Coolgardie Sanitarium. One of George’s sons, born 1904, recorded his father history and tells of being in hospital in Morgans as a 2-3 year old and Emily was there then. I doubt the memory of a child of that age and it is not possible as we have the marriage date in Adelaide.

We know that Matron was in charge of the Laverton District Hospital by 1933 and she is remembered by a man who was a 5-year old boy at the time. “I recall her as an imposing lady all dressed in white. To a five year old she was pretty old but on reflection she was probably 10 years older than my mother who was 30 at the time. (records showing she was about 56 years). She was crippled and moved around on crutches.”

Mt Morgans Hospital 1905

She took our mother and three children into the Doctors Quarters where my mother did the job of running the house for her. This lady was a much loved character of Laverton. Matron enjoyed a game of cards, was a smoker and enjoyed a drink of alcohol. She was very understanding of the aboriginal people, who came to the hospital seeking help.

We left Laverton in 1933 and returned in 1936 and Matron came to live with us at Cox’s Find after which she went to live in Mt Lawley WA. The last time I saw her was around 1950 at her house in Mt Lawley.”

Others who knew Matron at Laverton told how she would pull teeth and attended injured animals. Emily broke her leg and had the task of attending to it herself and so leaving her with the legacy of being “crippled”.

I have not been able to get access to the minutes of the Laverton Hospital Board meetings although I have been assured that they do exist.

Mount Lawley rate books, ward one, records Mrs. Emily Hart of 396 Beauford St. Mt Lawley paying the rates for Lot 6 Park Street Mt Lawley in 1941. 1949 Emily was listed as Home duties at 7 Park Street Mt Lawley, and she died there in 1952, she had suffered a Coronary Thrombosis. She had been dead 13 hours before Dr Blofeld-Moody attended.

The property was transferred to Edith Mary Meakin, 232 Bulwer St, Perth WA after the sale made by the recipients of her estate. Emily’s relatives in South Australia inherited and subsequently sold her property. The jewelry spoken of earlier was hidden inside a piece of furniture, which was sold at a second hand sale. It remained hidden for nearly 30 years. The jewelry has since been transferred from the original historical society to the Landsborough Historical Society, which has many of the Murphy family as members.

Emily is buried at Karrakatta Cemetery in an unmarked grave K/PR/KA0544 K0048771 Researched by Marion Ward

Matron Hart (nee Emily Murphy) Born 16 August 1874 Landsborough Victoria, Australia Died 23 March 1952 Mt Lawley Western Australia. Father: Benjamin Murphy (gardener), Mother: Annie Mc Donald.

VICTORY FOR THE STRIKERS

Kalgoorlie Western Argus: 14 July 1903. – A correspondent, telegraphing under yesterday’s date from Mt. Morgans, states :A fierce and decisive battle has been fought in this town, the contest lasting exactly 48 hours. The men held to their guns from
9 o’clock on Friday until about the same time on Sunday. with, of course, the usual exception of a few weak minded individuals, whose entry into the various hotels was accompanied by severe hooting from the onlookers.

Procession during the Mt Morgans Beer Strike

Entertainments and speeches were the order of the day and night to keep the enthusiasm going, and on Sunday night, while a smoke social was being held in the A.W.A. Hall, a demonstration took place. This consisted of the appearance on the stage of the various hotel keepers. They all spoke, and from the tone of their remarks it was very evident that they were already very tired of the strike, especially as the last weekend was connected with a pay day on the Westralia Mt. Morgans mine, and hardly a sovereign was divided amongst the six hotels. The battle was over, and the men have won the day. Beer and colonial wines will now be charged at the popular price of 6d per glass. Great credit is due to the leaders and to the immovable stand the men took.

I have just completed the following project on the early deaths in the Mount Margaret Registry District. These deaths are not the very first recorded for the cemeteries in this area but are the first from when the registry district opened an office in Leonora and started registering deaths in 1897. Prior to this deaths in the region would have been registered in the next nearest Registry office, perhaps Kalgoorlie or Southern Cross. The area in regards to Births Deaths and Marriages are roughly divided into the districts of Mt Margaret, Mt Malcolm and Mt Morgans (Mt Malcolm and Mt Morgans are also known as Malcolm and Morgans.

The deaths, which number 177, are between 10 Feb 1897 and 26 Dec 1902 and represent a cross section of the early residents of the district. It is also a valuable social record as well as for those searching their family history, as it shows things like occupations and the structure of family groups and of course where the people were from.

Among the 177 deaths there are, 14 women, 39 children or babies under 2 years (one set of twins), 17 mining accidents and three suicides. With the others, there were lots of different causes of death. Heat Apoplexy was common, as was Typhoid Fever. Some died in accidents and others drank themselves to death. Illness, accidents and misfortune has no favorites.

The people are buried in the following cemeteries:
Leonora Cemetery
Morgans (Mt Morgans) Cemetery
Laverton Cemetery
Erliston Cemetery
Mertondale Cemetery
Diorite King Cemetery
King of the Hills Cemetery
Malcolm (Mount Malcolm) Cemetery
Some lonely graves.

I hope that you may find this interesting and I would like to say that there has already been one inquiry and one person claimed for their family. I will soon be adding these short bio’s to the relevant cemetery pages on the Outback Family History Web site and if any one has any further details on any of these people, do let me know and of course if there are errors also get in touch – research@outbackfamilyhistory.com.au

Starting work as a drapers assistant he was soon bitten by the gold fever bug and spent the next 12 years travelling around the Goldfields of the Eastern States of Australia and New Zealand. He returned to Hill End with £10,000. He then began his partnership with Holtermann.

He took an active part in local affairs and after holding several positions he eventually became mayor for eight terms and from 1877 to 1885 he was elected to the legislative assembly serving as MLA for the Western Goldfields. He came to be know as ‘The Miners Friend’ for his generosity to those less fortunate. He set us a charity to deliver food to destitute diggers. In one gesture he had hundreds of trees shipped out from Germany and had them planted in a avenue from Hill End to Tambaroora.

However, his generous and trusting nature was to be his downfall. In 1894 he declared himself bankrupt. A lawyer, who he had entrusted his affairs to, dissapeared with his fortune leaving him with just £100. It was said he was so ashamed of his situation he would walk miles out of his way to avoid his neighbors.

Following the decline of mining in Hill End, Beyers decided to join the exodus to Western Australia to try to regain his fortune. His wife Mary, nee Emmett, had passed away in 1883 so, after paying all his debts, he moved to Kalgoorlie with his son Theodore and his two daughters Sylvia and Clara. He always hoped to return to Hill End one day, but this was not to be.

He was to work in many of the mining areas between Kalgoorlie, Leonora and Laverton. He was however never to recover his previous losses. In 1910 he was at Linden east of Menzies with his son Theodore when he was struck with paralysis. His other son, Oswald was at Yarri 72 kms to the south. Hugo was taken 103km to the Mt Morgans Hospital where he was unconscious on arrival. On the 28th May 1910 he was to suffer a second stroke which caused his death. He was buried in the Mount Morgans Cemetery.

“OUR FELLOW TOWNSMAN.” David Mickle

The party whom I wish to bring under this particular heading at present is Mr. David Mickle, hairdresser and tobacconist. David struck, the township in the year of our Lord 1901, and started business in a very humble way in a small hessian humpy somewhere off Murrin street. A very remarkable event happened at Mt Morgans about this time, which David still relates with gathering tears in his optics, and that was the breaking and entering of his establishment by burglars, who took with them when they left the sum of 8 pounds in notes, and the reason they didn’t take any more was because there wasn’t any more to take.
Providence must have looked down with an eye of pity on David because his career ever since has been like that of the Mercury, upward and onward. In short, David has prospered, and be is now the proud possessor of the largest hairdressing saloon (beautifully mirrored and pictured) on the northern fields. In fact, David has the reputation of being a white man at bottom, therefore when anyone feels time hanging heavily on his hands let him repair to David’s saloon, where a solo on the flute surely awaits him.
