From Grief to Despair: The Doyle Family Tragedy

On the 23rd of September 1903, in Gwalia Street, Leonora, Western Australia, an event would take place that would start a string of family tragedies. The event was the death of a little girl, Eileen Margaret Doyle. She died of Tonsillitis and Bronchitis and was only 2 ½yrs old. She had only been ill for a few days when she died and hadn’t been taken to the hospital. At this time, it was thought that children should be looked after at home when ill. Sadly, this was an all too common cause of death for young children in the early part of the 20th Century.

Her father was a young Irishman called Bernard Joseph Doyle who worked for the brewery as a driver. In 1900 in Coolgardie he married a young girl from Rheola in Victoria, Matilda ‘Tilly’ Jane nee JAMES, who had just arrived in Coolgardie, WA the year before at age 17 years. Bernard himself was only 22 years old when they married in the Coolgardie Roman Catholic church on the 6th June 1900.

They were soon expecting their first child, who was born the following year on 14th April 1901 at their home in MacDonald Street, Coolgardie. She was christened Eileen Margaret Doyle. Bernard and his young family travelled to Leonora not long after Eileen’s birth to take up a position with Mr McArdle as an agent for a local brewery on commission with a small salary. They set up a home in Gwalia Street, Leonora and for a time things went well until Bernard became ill with stomach pains. Appendicitis was diagnosed, but in those days, operations were not carried out unless the condition was serious. However, the little family was happy for a time, but there were to be no more babies. The first of a string of tragedies was then to take place. Little Eileen, who had been suffering from Tonsilitis contracted Bronchitis and died within a week.

The couple was heartbroken, but it was Bernard who seemed to be the most despairing. On top of this, the business he was working for was not doing well and was not paying him what they had agreed on. On the evening of the 17th December 1903, Bernard was not to be found. Earlier that evening, his wife Matilda had wanted him to accompany her to a Christmas concert in the town, but he declined as he said he had scratched his face and didn’t want to be seen. Earlier that day, Bernard had received several letters from his family back in Ireland, who had only just found out about the death of little Eileen. Reading these had greatly upset him. He blamed himself for the child’s death, saying he should have left them ‘below’, e.g., in Coolgardie.

When Matilda returned home at about 11 o’clock, Bernard was nowhere to be found. His clothes were still in his room. She had searched for him everywhere and thought he might have gone to the Cemetery to Eileen’s grave as he often did. He had been worried about business for some time, as his accounts were behind, so he wasn’t receiving his pay, and the commission of 2 ½% on sales brought in very little. He had not eaten during the day, and his wife thought it was because of a ‘turn’ with his appendicitis, but he did have one glass of beer.

When at dawn the following day Bernard still hadn’t returned, and Matilda had been searching all night, she went to a neighbour, a blacksmith called Alexander Lamont, who she roused from bed. She told him that Bernard was nowhere to be found and asked if he would go and check the water tank on the hill. Mr Lamont’s wife said she thought she heard someone stealing water during the night. When Alexander checked the tank, he found the body of a man, and he went straight to the police. He had been a friend of the couple for about four months. He said that two days prior, Bernard had told him he intended to give notice to Mr McArdle, his employer.

Constable Patrick O’Halloran was on the scene not long after 4am. He summoned the doctor and a JP, Mr Snell. Before removing the body from the tank, they measured the depth of the water, which was 18 inches. They had to cut open the tank to get the body out. He identified it as Bernard Doyle, as he knew him personally. The tank itself was 12 feet from the ground, so no one could fall in accidentally. Bernard had deliberately climbed in through the manhole.

Dr Bertram Wills carried out a post-mortem on Bernard’s body. He said the cause of death was drowning, and there were no other marks on the body. He said he examined the appendix, which was not active at the time of death. He gave his opinion that Mr Doyle was not strong, mentally, and the death of his daughter, who he was devoted to, and business worries could cause depression. The verdict of the jury and Coroner was that death was by suicide while temporarily of unsound mind.

Bernard was buried with his little daughter in the Roman Catholic section of the Leonora Cemetery.

Matilda was now destitute, and despite the help of kind neighbours, she decided to return to Coolgardie, where she may have had friends from when they lived there. However, fate was not done with this family, and Matilda became ill with Phthisis and died in Coolgardie on 26th September 1904, almost exactly a year from the death of her daughter. She died in a house in MacDonald Street, which is the street where her daughter was born, so perhaps they had family or friends there. She is buried alone in the Roman Catholic section of the Coolgardie cemetery.

Bernard Joseph DOYLE – was born in Tullow, Co Carlow, Ireland on 4 June 1876. He arrived in Australia in 1896. He was the son of Dennis DOYLE, a farmer.

Matilda Jane JAMES was born in Rheola, Victoria, in 1881. She was the daughter of John JAMES, a Blacksmith, and Mary Ann WAY. She came to Coolgardie in 1898, aged 17yrs where she met and married Bernard Joseph DOYLE.

Struck Down in His Prime: The Death of Constable Edward Tindall

Death from Typhoid Fever was common around the turn of the 19th century. Many of the victims were fit young men who could succumb to the disease and perish very quickly, as this story of a young Police Constable, who had been on the Goldfields less than 6 months, will tell. The following is an extract from the Admission Register of the Kalgoorlie Hospital:

From the Kalgoorlie Miner, 24th March 1900- The death took place yesterday, 23rd March 1900, at the Government Hospital of a member of the Kalgoorlie Police Force, Const Edward Tindall. Typhoid was the cause of death after a brief but severe illness, which Mr Tindall’s fine physique could not successfully resist. The deceased, who was highly regarded by his officers and comrades, was unmarried, about 24 years of age, and a native of New Zealand, in which colony his father is a minister of the Church of England. The funeral is to take place at 3. o’clock this afternoon.

Edward Tindall Obituary

In 2010, the headstone of Edward Tindall, which was in a poor state, was restored by family members. The headstone had been broken and repaired, but further restoration was required to bring it back to its original condition. The following photograph shows the headstone in 1900, surrounded by Edwards fellow officers.

The Premature Burial at Errolls: Tragedy, Doubt, and a Miner’s Last Choice

A telegraph was received at Cue from Burnakurra, stating that a trucker who was employed at the Wha GM at Errolls was killed. It also stated that the body was buried at Errolls and that no inquest was opened. The newspaper three days later reported – “In the circumstances, it will be necessary, so that the jury may view the body, to exhume the remains. The actions of those responsible for the premature burial are wholly inexplicable, in view of the fact that a police officer is stationed at Barrambie, a few miles distant”.

It appeared the fatality was preceded by a very peculiar combination of circumstances. Smith had a contract for hauling dirt from an open cut, which was completed on the day previous to his death. He, however, at the request of the management, agreed to work another shift, and should, in the ordinary course, have gone to work at two o’clock, the usual hour, and ceased at 10 p.m. For some reason, however, he was unable to commence until two hours later, when his attention was drawn to the fretting of the ground by some Italians. Smith continued working, and at 11 p.m., about two hundred tons of earth fell away. Smith was killed, also his horse pulling the trucks, and his dog. Had Smith been able to commence work at the usual time, he would have knocked off at 10 p.m., an hour before the accident. It is thought the fall was due to the recent heavy rains percolating the ground.

Frederick William Smith died 21 May 1908, aged 33yrs at the Wha Gold Mine at Errolls in the Sandstone district. – buried at Errolls by John Pooley. Witnesses present at the burial were Charles H Driver and John Looney. Death certified by Howard Bryden Smith (brother of the deceased) at Barrambie. Smith was a miner who was accidentally killed by a fall of earth at the Wha Goldmine. Born at Fords, South Australia, son of Isabella (nee Graham) and James Neilson Smith (Farmer). At the inquest, a verdict of accidental death was returned with no blame attached to any person.

Note:- Steve Rogers (Author of ‘No Sign of the Time) said that many years later, in the mine in which Smith was killed, Bluey Woinar (who is my husband’s Great Uncle) from Menzies, had found a revolver under a mass of quartz with one shot fired and five bullets still in the gun. So doubts arise as to whether Smith was killed by a bullet or the quartz fall. It is thought that he may have been buried alive and had taken his own life rather than slowly perish. In recent years, Steve Rogers cleared up the gravesite and repaired the headstone.

NOTE: Errolls is sometimes referred to as Errols. It is along the Meekatharra Sandstone road.

From Distant Shores to Eternal Rest: The Love of Ante and Petrica

The following story is an extract with kind permission from ‘For a Better Life, Yugoslavs on the Goldfields of Western Australia 1890-1970 by Dr Criena Fitzgerald.

One of the most tragic love stories was that of Ante Mateljan and Petrica Mikovic (Micovich). Luka Markovich, a friend of Ante Mateljan, brought Petrica’s photograph back to Kalgoorlie to show Ante. Petrica asked if he knew of any prospective suitors and had given him her photograph to show to them on his return to Australia. Her son Tony recalled his father’s story of the event:

While Luka Markovich was over there (Yugoslavia) he was also friends with this Mikovich family and when he said goodbye to the family my mum gave him a little photo and said, “If you think of anybody worthy of me, show him this photo and tell him to write to me.” So thats what happened.” So, when he came back here, he didnt give Dad the photo straight away, but he asked him, “Would you be interested in writing to a Montenegrin girl back home of a good family, and respected family” and Dad said ‘Yes” and he wrote to her and then he ended up bringing her out in 1938.

She set sail for Kalgoorlie in 1938 to marry Ante Mateljan. Ante had a deposit on a house in Forrest Street in Boulder, and the couple married, with their son Tony being born that same year. Late that year, Ante was dismissed from his job in Kalgoorlie because of his membership in the Communist Party, and the young family was forced to relocate to Gwalia, where he resumed work as a machine miner.

Double YugoSIav Wedding Great – Jubilation among the 550 Yugoslav residents in the Kalgoorlie and Boulder districts on Saturday marked the occasion of the double wedding of two of their countrymen. At 10.30 a.m. the Boulder registrar, Mr. Gannon, married Anton Mateljan to Petricia Mikovich and Vincent Ujcich to Millie Rjavic. In the evening more than 200 guests, including the Mayor of Boulder, Mr W. F. Coath, were present at a reception in the Boulder Town Hall. Mrs. Mateljan arrived in Australia on October 11th and could speak very little English. She comes from near the Dalmatian border. Mrs Rjavic, however, has been in Australia for two years.

In April 1940, Petrica was hit by a car as she alighted onto the road from a taxi in Tower Street, Leonora, and she was killed. Her son Tony, aged 9 months, who she was holding at the time of the accident, was seriously injured but survived after spending 50 days in the Kalgoorlie Hospital.

Ante never got over her death and brought up his son on his own with the assistance of various women whom he paid to help him. In 1946, Ante was “turned down” with silicosis and had to leave mining, and with his son, Tony, decided to make the journey home to Yugoslavia on the SS Partizanka in 1948. Unable to leave his wife behind, Ante had her body disinterred and cremated, and her ashes interred in a box which he took with him back to Yugoslavia.

Petrica’s ashes returned with the family to Australia in 1953 and, on Ante’s death in 1973, her ashes were interred with his body.The Funeral of Petrica Mateljan with the Yugoslav Club on the right (which is still there today, 3 Moran Street, Boulder). When the Ground Refused the Dead: Yerilla’s First Cemetery Tragedy

Distressing Complications

From the Goldfields Morning Chronicle 26th March 1897 – On Monday morning, 22 March 1897, Mr Simon Elliott, age 63 yrs, manager of the Yerilla Claims, died suddenly at GM Lease 64R. He was at work but died as a result of a rupture of the heart and was buried the next day. Death certified in writing, Hubert Elliott, his son. Mr S. Anstell, Mine Manager, and brother Freemason read the service at the grave in the Yerilla cemetery. Two shifts had been employed digging, but the grave was only half finished when the cortege arrived. Ten hours of work had then been done on an ironstone conglomerate. The ceremony was gone through, and the coffin was placed in the grave, which was later finished. A doctor from Niagara arrived in the evening with instructions from Warden Owen that the body be exhumed so that a post-mortem might be conducted. (Note: there is no mention made of a post-mortem on his death certificate.)

A new cemetery site is to be chosen as the ground in the present one proved to be too hard. Mr Elliott’s two sons were with him, Hubert and John; the rest of his large family remained in Ballarat, Victoria. (Note: Catherine Elliott and her family then moved to the Goldfields and lived at 59 Hanbury Street, Kalgoorlie, before moving to her daughter’s house in Trafalgar, where she died in 1917. She is buried in the Kalgoorlie Cemetery.)

ELLIOTT Simon was a mine manager who died from a ruptured heart. He was formerly the underground manager for the WA Gold Co. Born in Cumberland, Victoria, the son of Simon Elliott. At the age of 40 years, he married Catherine BELL in Clunes, Victoria. At the time of his death, he had only been in Western Australia for 2 ½ years. Their children at the time of his death were – Alice 21yrs, John Moore 19yrs, Violet 16yrs, Hubert 16yrs, May Ruby 13yrs and Lillie 10yrs. Reg North Coolgardie 54/1897.

BOASE, unnamed male — d 18 Mar 1906, buried by Father: Philemon Boase (Contractor), Mother: Ellen Elizabeth WOOSNAM. The couple had already lost another son, Phil Boase, who died aged 16 months in 1900 (he was born in Gippsland, VIC) and is buried in the Coolgardie Cemetery. Their surviving children were James, born in Kalgoorlie in 1901, John, born in Kurrawang in 1902 and Annie, born in Niagara in 1904. Their last child was also to be stillborn, a boy, on the 14th August 1911 and is buried in Kookynie Cemetery. Reg North Coolgardie 14/1906.

MARSHALL Thomas John — d about 14 Feb 1899, 26yrs, 12 miles from Yerilla on the Linden track – buried in the original Yerilla cemetery. Death certified in writing by William Marshall, his brother from Pendinnie. He was a miner who died of thirst, having lived in Western Australia for 2 years. He was born in Richmond, Victoria. Son of David Marshall (labourer) and Ann, nee Noble. Reg North Coolgardie 9/1899.

FERRIS William — d 12 Nov 1905, 42yrs, at Mt Catherine near Yerilla, Cause: Heart disease, verdict of the Coroners, buried Yerilla Cemetery. Born in South Australia, but no family details were known. Reg North Coolgardie 50/1905.

Note: The ground in the original cemetery was very hard, necessitating blasting almost from the surface. It took two men 1 ½ days to dig the first grave. Not much foresight was shown in the selection of this site for a cemetery, and a new cemetery site had to eventually be chosen.

The Importance of being Frank –

Bernard Joseph Frank was born in Nelson Lyell, New Zealand, in 1867. He was a miner and was the son of Jacob FRANK (Carpenter) and Mary HASLAM. He first came to Victoria and then on to the WA Goldfields in 1893, and headed to Broad Arrow to seek his fortune. This was where his first son was born before his marriage. He was only moderately successful and was involved in mining most of his life, as were his sons.

Alice died in Kalgoorlie in 1930, aged 57yrs and Bernard in 1940, aged 73 years; they are buried together in the Catholic section of the Kalgoorlie Cemetery. At the time of their deaths, they were living at 225 Piccadilly Street, Kalgoorlie.

A Brother’s Return in Mourning: Tragedy on the Coolgardie Goldfields

Albert Ernest Bezzant was born in 1873 in Buninyong, Victoria. He was the youngest son of Richard Bezzant (1830-1912) and Sarah, nee Scott (1827-1905). Albert died at the age of 22 years on 12 February 1895 in Coolgardie, Western Australia. On his death registration, he is listed as a Miner and the cause of his death was Typhoid Fever. When Albert was born, his father, Richard, was 43 years old and his mother, Sarah, was 46 years old. He had five brothers and three sisters who were:

Grave of Albert E Bezzant – Coolgardie Cemetery – Photo Find a Grave

Albert is remembered by an elaborate headstone in the Coolgardie Cemetery with the following inscription:

“In loving memory of Albert,
youngest son of R. & S. Bezzant,
Newcastle, N.S.W.,
who died 12th February 1895
aged 22 years.”

Albert was followed to Western Australia by his older brother Walter Bezzant, who also brought his young bride, Elizabeth Jane Bezzant, nee Trewhella. They had married in Buninyong, Victoria, in 1896. Elizabeth, who was only 27 years old, died giving birth to their only child, Muriel Hill Bezzant, who was three days old when Elizabeth died on the 18th October 1898. She is buried near Albert in the Wesleyan section of the Coolgardie cemetery, and she also has an imposing headstone.

In July 1896, Walter was appointed manager of the Cosgroves Bayley’s South Gold Mine in Coolgardie. In the first half-yearly report, the board stated:

“we desire to take this opportunity of expressing our satisfaction of the capable and energetic management of Mr. Walter Bezzant.”

Cosgroves Mine was where Elizabeth had died, so she and Walter must have lived on the lease, which was quite usual. It’s possible that this was the mine where Albert was also working prior to Walter becoming manager. How sad would it have been for Walter to return to the Eastern States in Oct of 1899 without his brother and wife, but only with a young child? He was to remarry in NSW in 1903 and have one more daughter.

Where Friends Were Legion: Jim and Mary Doyle and the Heart of Widgiemooltha

In a beautiful location overlooking the salt bed of Lake Lefroy, the remains of at least 17 people lie in the Widgiemooltha Cemetery. There are only a few headstones, the largest of which commemorates five members of the Doyle family. Widgemooltha

John James (known as James or Jim) Doyle was born in Dublin, Ireland, in the early 1860s. At some stage, he spent 3 years in NSW, and by the early 1890s, he was in Melbourne, where he took part in a tug-of-war competition for the victorious Irish team against teams from all over the world at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1892. Soon after the collapse of the banking system in early 1893 and in the early years of the depression, he came to WA, attracted by the finding of gold at Coolgardie. For several years, he prospected around Coolgardie, Mt Ragged, and Broad Arrow before arriving in Widgiemooltha. He must have been one of the first prospectors in the area because an early name for the location was Doyle’s Gully. In 1896, he decided to stay there,

and that is where he remained until just a few months before he died in 1933.

He quickly saw the need to service a coach track from Esperance to Coolgardie and established a water condenser and stables to provide for the travelling prospectors. Soon, Warden Finnerty, a fellow Irishman, suggested he sell something “more exhilarating than water”, and Doyle obtained a licence for a hotel from that same Warden. The hotel was established in 1896.

After the railway arrived in 1908, the hotel and the rest of the townsite were moved to the siding a mile or so southeast of its original location. In 1909, the town consisted of two hotels, a post office, an empty baker’s shop, and several surveyed but unoccupied residential lots. The sign on the hotel retained what Doyle believed to be the Aboriginal pronunciation of the name given to the town – Wijimoola – although the railways called the siding Widgemooltha, with authorities inserting an “i” in 1944. The name is derived from a nearby hill and waterhole and is thought to refer to the beak of an emu. The hotel also had the name IRENE in letters four feet high, but the origin of this is unclear. The hotel was widely advertised as the ‘Irene Hotel’ in 1909 and was still known by that name in 1915. As mining activity grew, George Sweeney established the Lefroy Hotel, but when a decline set in, James Doyle bought the hotel and amalgamated the two. Over the years, James maintained an interest in various mines, including the Flinders mine.
In 1896, he married Mary Elizabeth HAYES in Coolgardie. She was born in Victoria in 1864 and was reputed to be the first white woman to live in Widgiemooltha. It is thought they met when she worked at Doyle’s Hotel. She had at least two sisters in WA – Catherine, who ran a hotel near Coolgardie and was later postmistress at Higginsville, and Frances, married Richard Kuhlken, a police officer at Norseman.

On the Doyle headstone, there are the names of three of their children who died as infants. Francis Joseph died aged only 6 days on 15 August 1897, Gerald John died on 16 November 1898 aged 2 months, and James Nicholas died at 10 months of age on 9 August 1900. There do not appear to be any official records of the death of these three children; there is only a birth registration for James Nicholas. His death and his mother’s accompanying illness were reported in the Coolgardie Herald.

Also on the headstone is Frances Amy Kuhlken, who died aged 7 months on 17 November 1902. She was the daughter of Mary Doyle’s sister, Francis and Richard Kuhlken.

James and Mary continued as popular and civic-minded hosts of the hotel for over thirty years. They led many fund-raising efforts for charities, particularly the Red Cross, during the War. Mary nursed many a “perisher”, travelling prospectors who were close to death from thirst, and passers-by who were down on their luck, never left the hotel without being given a few tins of food. A report in the Sunday Times (26 March 1933) of the death of James stated that “there is scarcely an old hand, whether he be a prospector, dryblower, fossicker, or general goldfields toiler, who has not, in some way, come in pleasant contact with

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Doyle, their friends being legion, their enemies non-existent, and their popularity unbounded.”

One photo was published in the Sunday Times on 16th August 1925 of Mr and Mrs J. Doyle of Widgiemooltha Station. The caption shows them as pastoralists. No record of Widgiemooltha Station as a pastoral lease can be found. Perhaps the original reference was to them as residents near the railway station.

James became ill, and eventually they had to sell the hotel in 1932 and moved to Kalgoorlie, where he died at St John of God Hospital on 18 March 1933. His funeral service was held in Kalgoorlie, and it was reported that the number of people attending was a state record. The cortege then travelled down the highway to Widgiemooltha where he was buried “in the little God’s Acre by the salt lake” with another large crowd.

Mary continued to spend time at Widgiemooltha but moved to Kalgoorlie about 1940. She died in the hospital there on 13 July 1945. She was buried alongside her husband and three little babies, the spot now marked by one of the few headstones in the cemetery.

Richard Henry Philippe was born in January 1839 at St James West, London, England. He was the son of William Philippe (Tailor) and Jane, nee Allan. He came to Australia on the ‘Medway’ in 1855 at the age of 16 years. He was to live in Victoria for 40 years before coming to Western Australia in 1895 for the last 11 years of his life. He married Eliza Mary Howell in Sale, Victoria, at the age of 23 years on Christmas Eve of 1862.

Eliza Mary, nee Howells, was born on 31 January 1839 in Monmouth, Wales. She was the daughter of James Howells and Mary Ann, nee Cooper of Amberley Farm, Rosedale, Gippsland, VIC. Eliza was involved in a shipwreck on her voyage to Australia as one of 250 immigrant girls. This is what happened:

‘A WRECK’

The barque Sacramento with Capt Holmes, Master, which left London on 22^nd Dec 1862, with 250 female Government immigrants onboard, arrived off the Port Phillips Heads yesterday. At about 3am, the ship struck the Point Lonsdale reef about one mile from the shore and four miles from the lighthouse. Some of the immigrants were taken to the shore in boats, and others landed temporarily on the reef. The condition of some of the poor creatures, many in their night dresses, was truly pitiable. We are very glad to be able to state that great promptitude was shown by the Immigration Department in ministering to the necessities of the poor sufferers.

All of the belongings of the survivors were lost; these were all they possessed to start their new life. In addition, the ship’s doctor had died during the voyage, so several lives were lost during the four-month journey. Had the disaster happened an hour later, it was likely that many lives would have been lost. Fortunately, £60,000 in coins was saved.

The mate of the Sacramento, James Donohue (Donohoo), who was in charge of the vessel on the night of the disaster, was committed to trial for a ‘breach of duty’ in the Supreme Court. He was found guilty of ‘Neglect of Duty’ and was sentenced to four months imprisonment with hard labour.

Eliza and Richard were to have 10 children: James William born 1863, Richard Henry born 1865, Eliza Jane born 1865, Alfred Ernest born 1868, John Francis Baptist born 1870, Sarah Cooper born 1874, Ada born 1875, Bertrand Charles born 1879 & Philip Herbert born 1881. Bertrand Charles Philippe was born on 23 Mar 1879 in Sale, Victoria. He was the second youngest of Richard and Eliza’s children. He was to marry Violet Mary Millar, nee Knight, a widow with three children, William, Reginald and Ernest. They married on 4 Apr 1909 in the Methodist Church, Mt Magnet, WA. Bertrand enlisted in the AIF Home Service in April of 1915, where he gave his occupation as a Telephone linesman. He was 39 years old at this time and was a Sapper and a cable hand in the signal service. He was discharged in Jan 1918 as unfit for service, not due to misconduct, because of what appears to have been shell shock.

Violet Mary, nee Knight – formerly Millar – Violet married Frank Ernest Millar in Victoria in 1901. Frank died in Macedon, Victoria, in 1906. Frank and Violet had three boys, and with them and her parents, she travelled to Western Australia, where she met and married Bertrand Philippe in 1909 in Mt Magnet, WA.

Bertrand and Violet had 5 children, the first two, Elsie Jean, born 1909, and Richard John, born 1911, were both born in Mt Magnet. The family then moved to Perth, where three more children were born: Bertrand Philip, born 1914, Alfred Ernes,t born 1917 and Leonard James, born 1919. Due to financial difficulties, Bertrand moved to Kalgoorlie and lived with his mother at 5 Lode Street, Trafalgar. When his mother died, the house was sold and divided up among his siblings. During Bertrand’s war service, his family moved to Victoria Park near Perth.

Bertrand died in Kalgoorlie in 1950 from a ruptured ulcer. He and Violet were living at 32 Victoria Street, Kalgoorlie, at the time of his death. Violet survived him by 7 years and passed away in 1957.
